Your Pesticide-Busting Action Plan
Pesty Pesticides
Here’s a quick list of five tips on how to keep pesticides out of your life:
1) Eat Smart
Wash fruits and veggies with a 1% baking soda solution (1 tsp per 2 cups water) for 15 minutes to remove pesticide residues. Go organic for high-risk crops like strawberries, spinach, or apples (check EWG’s “Dirty Dozen” list).
2) Dress Clean
Choose organic cotton or bamboo for you and baby’s clothes, bedding, and swaddles to avoid pesticide residues from non-organic cotton. Example: look for Oeko-Tex or GOTS certifications.
3) Pest Control Wisely
Skip chemical pest sprays in your home or yard. Use natural alternatives like diatomaceous earth or essential oil traps (e.g., peppermint for ants).
4) Outdoor Smarts
Limit DEET use and rinse skin/clothes after outdoor activities. Opt for long sleeves or mosquito nets for baby.
5) Shop Savvy
Avoid imported, non-organic produce from regions with lax pesticide rules. Choose pasteurized dairy to reduce DDT exposure.
