Why Self-Care Matters
Self-Care You Deserve
So you’re caring for this new being, but how are you caring for yourself through it all? Simple self-care practices can be the perfect reset and allow you to carry on with a fresh and resilient perspective. It’s these simple acts that leave you feeling rejuvenated, cared for, and ready to take on whatever the day has in store.
Have you heard the saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup?”. Well, caring for a newborn is a lot of work– physically, emotionally, and energetically. That is why it is essential to also carve out just a few minutes of your day to care for yourself. It’s not a privilege, it’s a parental responsibility. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits.

So What Can You Do?
You don’t need to schedule an elaborate spa day or go on some expensive retreat to practice self-care. It’s the daily routine that we use to do without much thought, even, that will make a huge difference in your day now and in the days ahead. Beyond drawing upon your previous daily self-care habits, we’re here to offer some simple practices to incorporate into your routine that take just a few minutes– and believe us, it is worth it! Here are some tips to get going:
Morning Routine Wash your face and moisturize, brush your hair and teeth, and change out of those bedtime clothes. Enjoy your morning coffee or tea next to the window, and allow some fresh air and morning light into your life. Remember to eat a high protein breakfast and double up on that water intake. Say cheers to a new day- you made it through another (possibly) sleepless night. And remember, Mama, you got this.
Afternoon Routine After a nourishing midday meal, take 5 to do a quick journal entry to check in. Not much of a writer? Turn on some soothing tunes or a guided meditation and close your eyes, maybe get that much needed shuteye when the baby does, or invite some movement into your body (Check out some recommendations within the Movement pillar). The afternoon is the perfect time to reset with intention as you gear up for the remainder of the day.
Evening Routine Another day has come and gone, and it’s time to start winding down. Although baby or other kids may have a different plan, do not fret– you’re almost there. Light a candle and take a shower with some essential oils, or a bath with some salt and herbs and rinse off the day. Maybe have that warm cup of tea and check in with your support team to decompress– calling a friend or talking to a partner can be a great way to process the day and reset for the evening.
Tailored Tips for Your Journey
Vaginal Delivery Mamas
Had a tear or episiotomy? Bring a chair with a cushion into the bathroom to sit for your morning or evening routines so you can enjoy the process. Once cleared by your doctor, try a sitz bath or “yoni steam” to help in the recovery of those sensitive, and powerful, parts.
C-Section Mamas
First 6 weeks? Bring a chair into the bathroom to sit for your morning or evening routines so you can enjoy the process. Give extra love to treating your incision. It will respond well to consistent care in the early stages of healing.
It’s Ok To Not Feel Ok
Chat with your support team or health care provider if you feel that you need more guidance or care when it comes to your emotional or mental health. Remember it’s ok to not be ok. Sometimes we may not even see our own struggle or blues when we’re in the thick of it so try to stay open when those around you ask how you’re doing. Accept help when it’s given and ask when needed, and remember you don’t have to do it alone.
