What to Expect with Baby Poops and Pees That First Week

In addition to possibly thinking about your own bowel movements postpartum, you are most definitely thinking about (and tracking) your newborn's. Here's what to expect that first week:

Poops (a.k.a. Stools)

  • Days 1–3: Meconium
A baby's first poops are called meconium. It's thick, sticky, and dark (black or dark green), and created in utero from digested cells, amniotic fluid, and mucus.
Fun fact: Colostrum has a laxative effect to help flush out this sticky substance.

  • Days 2–4: Transitional Stool
With the introduction of milk, the poops will begin to transition to a brown-green color and looser texture.

  • Day 5+: Milk Stool
Breastfed babies will typically have mustard-yellow, seedy, and loose stools with a mild smell. Formula-fed babies will also have a yellow, sometimes brown, pasty stool with more of an odor.

Pees (a.k.a. Voids)

Monitoring a baby's urine output is also essential in ensuring adequate milk intake.

  • Days 1–3: Babies should have at least one or two wet diapers daily.

  • Day 4: At least six wet diapers per day.

Output patterns that may indicate feeding challenges include:

  1. Not passing transitional or seedy, yellow stools by day 4.

  2. Having fewer than six clear pees per day by day 4.

  3. Appearance of urate crystals (red/orange) in the diaper after day 3.

  4. Fewer than four daily stools by day 4 of life.

Tracking color, consistency, and frequency in the first week gives you and your team a baseline. It sheds light on baby's feedings, and weight loss or gain patterns. If something feels off and baby is exhibiting other signs of discomfort or illness, consult with your pediatrician. If a baby doesn't have transitional stools or seedy stools by day 4, it is important to consult with a pediatrician and a lactation professional to ensure adequate milk intake. If you notice white stools, blood in the stool, black stool after the meconium stage, diarrhea with fever or other signs of dehydration, or hard stools with straining and discomfort, seek medical attention.

Use the Diaper Change and Baby Feeding Logs to help keep track of patterns for your appointments, and for some peace of mind.
